Several years ago, while doing research at the library, I ran across a little
book titled "No Plot? No Problem! A Low-Stress, High-Velocity Guide to Writing a Novel in 30 Days", by a guy named Chris Baty. This “how to” book was written so tongue in cheek, but so concisely, that I was immediately sucked in. It was "No Plot? No Problem!” that led me to NaNoWriMo and the concept, the belief that I might actually be able to write that one novel that is said to reside in each and every one of us.
So, let me give you the “25 cent tour” of NaNoWriMo, where willing participants begin writing on November 1st, with the goal of writing a 50,000 word novel (approximately 175 pages) by midnight, November 30th. That is 50,000 words in 30 days people! And I am here to tell you that it can be done (even if it needs extensive editing)!
Freelance writer Chris Baty founded the writing project he dubbed NaNoWriMo in July of 1999 in the San Francisco Bay area. That first year 21 writers participated.
In the year 2000, NaNoWriMo was moved to November in order "to more fully take advantage of the miserable weather," according to Baty. That year an official website was launched and 140 participants signed up for the event - including several from other countries. Of the 140 participants, 21 completed the challenge.
The following year, Baty expected similar numbers to participate, but a whopping 5,000 participants registered. He credited this surge to word being spread by bloggers and various news organizations - including the Los Angeles Times and Washington Post.
By 2011, over 256,000 writers from around the world took up the challenge and almost 37,000 of that number were victorious!
I urge writers and would-be writers to visit http://nanowrimo.org/en/about to find out more about NaNoWriMo and Chris Baty’s humorous approach to noveling – you won’t regret it.
This website is now a well-oiled machine that offers participants: forums, writing buddies, the ability to chat with other participants in your or any other region, pep talks from an all-star team of published authors throughout the month, your very own dashboard to monitor your progress and a plethora of other goodies to make your personal challenge as pleasant and painless as possible.
And while there check out Chris’s book, "No Plot? No Problem! A Low-Stress, High-Velocity Guide to Writing a Novel in 30 Days". This book will give you the creative boost you need to tackle writing that “Best Seller” in a mere month!
